    Multiscale Simulations of Membrane Proteins
Membrane proteins account for nearly a quarter of all genes. However, much remains to be understood concerning their structure and function. Most membrane proteins have transmembrane domains made up of bundles of hydrophobic α-helices. The lateral association of TM helices within a lipid bilayer environment is a key stage in the folding of membrane proteins. It may also play a role in signalling across cell membranes. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations may be used to probe the interactions of membrane proteins with bilayers and their component lipids on an extended (~1 µs) timescale. Conversion to atomistic resolution allows protein/lipid and protein/protein interactions to be examined in greater detail. This multiscale approach will be examined via examples from ongoing studies of a range of membrane protein systems including: (i) transmembrane helix dimerization within cell membranes; and (ii) interactions of interactions of PIP2 with the inward rectifier potassium channels

    Statistical Genetics Seminars

The seminars will be held approximately monthly, and will usually be in the

      Roger Bannister Lecture Theatre
      1st Floor, Medical School Building
      Norfolk Place, Paddington
The main entrance to the building is now controlled by swipe-card barriers. Some but not all IC swipe cards will work; if not you can request access if you are a frequent visitor. The entrance is staffed at all times and non-IC people should address themselves to the security desk, state their purpose, and not be carrying any weapons of mass destruction or similar. For additions/removals to the list please contact Madeline Kirk m.kirk@imperial.ac.uk. For suggestions of speakers etc please e-mail Professor David Balding d.balding@imperial.ac.uk.
